Commander Prema McIntosh is a legal officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Law where she co-teaches Law of Armed Conflict (LW474). CDR McIntosh joined the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) after completing her BA(Hons) in History and LL.B. at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington in 2007, and was admitted to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2009. As a legal officer CDR McIntosh has held a variety of roles within the NZDF, including most recently as the Chief of Staff to the Director-General of Defence Legal Services. CDR McIntosh, although an officer in the Navy, has served alongside commanders of all three of the NZ Armed Forces, and has deployed operationally both on land (NZ PRT, Afghanistan, 2012-13) and at sea (HMNZS TE KAHA, Combined Maritime Forces, CTF150 and CTF151, 2015). Her other roles have included Senior Legal Advisor to 1st (New Zealand) Brigade, Training and Doctrine Command (Army), and RNZAF Base Ohakea; Assistant Director of Military Prosecutions; and Deputy Director Personnel Law at Headquarters NZDF, Wellington.
