Prof David Letts
David Letts is Director of the Centre for Military and Security Law, at the Australian National University College of Law. Prior to academic life, David served in the Royal Australian Navy retiring as a Commodore (1-star). Naval service included Supply Officer of HMAS Brisbane (DDG41), the RAN’s Fleet Legal Officer, deployment to East Timor as Chief Legal Adviser to the UNPKF Commander, Chief of International Law for MNF-I in Baghdad, Chief Staff Officer to the RAN Chief of Navy and RAN’s Head of Personnel and Training.
David’s research interests centre upon the application of legal regimes to military operations, and he has published academic articles and book chapters on topics including military justice, law of the sea, the law of naval warfare, international humanitarian law and the legal issues that arise on peacekeeping operations. He is an elected member of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, Sanremo, Italy.
