David Letts is an Associate Professor at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong and an Honorary Associate Professor at the Australian National University College of Law in Canberra, Australia. Prior to his academic career, David served in the Royal Australian Navy retiring as a Commodore (1-star). David is one of the authors of the Newport Manual on the Law of Naval Warfare and his research interests centre upon the application of legal regimes to military operation. He has published on topics including military justice, law of the sea, the law of naval warfare, international humanitarian law and the legal issues that arise on peacekeeping operations. He is an elected member of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, Sanremo, Italy..
