Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Bristol. Previously he was an Associate Professor at the University of Reading (2013-21), Graduate Teaching Assistant in Public International Law at the University of Oxford (2012-13), and British Research Council Fellow at the John W. Kluge Center, Library of Congress, Washington DC (2011-12).

He researches and writes mainly in the fields of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and international dispute settlement. He is the author of Detention in Non-International Armed Conflict (OUP, 2016), which was awarded the 2016 ASIL Lieber Prize and the 11th Paul Reuter Prize. He has published in journals including the European Journal of International Law, International & Comparative Law Quarterly, Columbia Journal of Transnational Law and Israel Law Review.
