Welmoet Wels is a lecturer and PhD candidate at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Her research centers on the treatment of dead bodies of armed conflict, with a focus on Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, and International Criminal Law. As a consultant, she is involved in various projects related to peacekeeping, protection of civilians, and gender, performing evaluations, research, editing, reporting, and lecturing.

Welmoet is the co-chair of the Dutch Peacekeeping Network which convenes NGOs, academia, and the Dutch Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, to consider and improve the Dutch role in UN peacekeeping operations. Previously, she worked for UN peacekeeping missions and UNHCR in various African countries, always with protection of civilians as her main portfolio. Before this, she worked in human rights defense in mental health care. Welmoet serves as a reserve officer in the Netherlands Army. She holds an MA in the Classics and an LLM in Public International Law from Leiden University, the Netherlands.
