Dr Julie Fraser
Dr Julie Fraser is a human rights lawyer and an Assistant Professor with the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights and the Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Prior to her academic career, Julie practised law as a qualified lawyer, including with the Australian Government Solicitor and the International Criminal Court. Julie’s present research interests include human rights and the environment, as well as relationships between Islamic and international law. She teaches both bachelor and master students, has several publications on a variety of international law topics, and has presented her work at conferences worldwide. Julie completed her PhD research in 2018, which won the Max van der Stoel Prize in Human Rights, and was published as a monograph entitled: Social Institutions and International Human Rights Law Implementation: ‘Every Organ of Society’ (Cambridge University Press 2020). Julie is a senior peace fellow with the Public International Law & Policy Group and sits on the Board of the Leiden Journal of International Law. She has been a visiting scholar at Monash University, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and the University of Washington. In addition to the PhD, Julie holds three degrees, a BA and LLB (honours) from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and an LL.M (cum laude) with from Utrecht University.
