Since 2020 Erika de Wet is Professor of International Law and Head of the Institute of International Relations in the Faculty of Law, University of Graz, Austria. Since July 2015 she is also Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Law, University of Bonn, Germany. Before joining the University of Graz, she was the first South African Research Initiative (SARChI) Professor of International Constitutional Law in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa (2016-2019), as well as co-founder of the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa at the University of Pretoria (2011-2015). Earlier in her career, she worked in various capacities in Switzerland, the United States, The Netherlands and South Africa.

She obtained her B.Iur and LL.B as well as her LL.D (in comparative constitutional law) at the University of the Free State, South Africa. She holds an LL.M from Harvard University and completed her Habilitationsschrift  (in public international law) at the University of Zurich, Switzerland in December 2002. A revised version, entitled the Chapter VII Powers of the United Nations Security Council, was subsequently published with Hart Publishing in 2004. Her work has been widely cited, including by the European Court of Human Rights, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the United Kingdom Supreme Court. Her most recent book, Military Assistance on Request and the Use of Force,  published with Oxford University Press in 2020,  has been described as the ‘go-to’ text in a review in the European Journal of International Law (2022, p. 1043).

She is inter alia a member of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Use of Force (for the Netherlands), the Scientific Advisory Board of ICON, the Council of the German Society of International Law and the Scientific and Development Advisory Policy Committee of the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law. Since October 2020, Erika de Wet is Co-Editor-in-Chief (with Kathrin Maria Scherr) of the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law.
