Prof Ioana Cismas
Ioana Cismas is the Co-Director of the Centre for Applied Human Rights and a Professor at York Law School, University of York. She is the Principal Investigator of the Beyond Compliance Consortium’s research programme “Building Evidence on Promoting Restraint by Armed Actors”.
An international law scholar, Ioana teaches, researches and provides legal and policy advice in public international law, human rights law, international humanitarian law, law and religion, and transitional justice. Her publications explore the intersection between compliance, accountability and legitimacy, in relation to various state and non-state actors, and include Religious Actors and International Law (Oxford University Press, 2014). In the past, she served as consultant to the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence and as legal advisor to the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council. Ioana holds a PhD in international law (summa cum laude) from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
