James (Jim) A. Schoettler, Jr. is an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he has taught courses on international humanitarian law since 2006.  Professor Schoettler is a co-author of The War on Terror and the Laws of War: A Military Perspective, published by Oxford University Press (2d ed. 2015) and The Law of Armed Conflict: An Operational Approach, published by Wolters Kluwer (2d ed. 2019).

From 1983 until 2013, Professor Schoettler served on both active duty and in the Reserves as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate, retiring in 2013 as a Colonel. During his military career, he served as a Reservist in the U.S. Army Office of the Judge Advocate General, including as the Assistant Chief (IMA) of the International and Operational Law Division (now the National Security Law Division). His last duty assignment was with the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (now the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency), where he served as Deputy Counsel and Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Element.

Professor Schoettler also practiced law as a civilian, including serving for thirty years as an in-house counsel with the U.S. company, Centrus Energy, a producer and supplier of enriched uranium for nuclear fuel for the generation of electricity. He retired from Centrus Energy in 2024.
