Dr Joshua Joseph Niyo is the Regional Legal Adviser for East and Central Africa at Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. He specializes in public international law, particularly international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law (IHRL), and international criminal law. He is actively involved in a multi-year project to enhance IHL capacity in Mozambique, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan, mainly through engagement with humanitarian actors. His career encompasses roles in international NGOs such as Human Rights Watch and the ICRC, and work within the UN system, including the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Human Rights Committee. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer of IHL and IHRL at UCLA, UC Irvine, and Pepperdine University, and in 2019, he received the AHRI Best Conference Paper Prize for his work on armed non-State actors.
