MAJ Gaby Sleeman
Major Gaby Sleeman is a serving officer within the Army Legal Services of the British Army since January 2012. She commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and deployed immediately on the UN mission in Cyprus. Initially posted to deliver advice to Commanders on disciplinary and employment related matters, she was latterly employed in 2016 to prepare soldiers and officers for operational deployments around the world. As part of a multinational force, she taught Law of Armed Conflict to legal advisers within the Ugandan Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) in Uganda and to Gurkha soldiers based in Brunei. Following promotion, she completed a tour at the Service Prosecuting Authority, where she gained her Higher Rights of Audience (Criminal), completed Rape and Serious Sexual Offences training and a senior advocacy course at Keble College, Oxford University prosecuting Courts Martials trials in Cyprus, Germany and the UK. Major Sleeman became the legal adviser to the 77th Brigade, a specialist unit delivering Information Activities and Human Security Subject Matter Experts in support of over 20 ongoing operational activities across the breadth of Army and Joint activity. Most recently she provided operational legal advice to another government agency before arriving at West Point.
Major Sleeman works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Law and Philosophy, teaches International Law and the Law of Armed Conflict, participates in cadet summer training activities, and assists with Lieber events. In addition to teaching she is completing academic research to obtain a Masters from the University of Reading.
