Major Jenny Maddocks qualified as a lawyer in 2001, commencing her legal career at the London office of Norton Rose, a leading international law firm. After several years working in private practice, she was selected to join the Army Legal Service in January 2009.

During her military career to date, Major Maddocks has carried out a range of roles including operational deployments to Afghanistan in 2012 and Iraq in 2019. In addition, she spent one year assigned to the International Military Advisory and Training Team in Sierra Leone and three years at the Service Prosecuting Authority in Germany.

From 2016 to 2018, Major Maddocks was assigned to the Stockton Center for the Study of International Law at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. There, she commenced her PhD studies, focusing on state responsibility for international law violations involving non-State actors in armed conflict, under the supervision of Professor Mike Schmitt. Major Maddocks is now assigned to a UK operational headquarters, advising on a variety of international law issues, while also completing her PhD thesis on a part-time basis.
