Announcement: Williams Chosen to Lead West Point Department of Law
The Lieber Institute is pleased to announce the selection of COL Winston S. Williams to serve as Professor and Head of the Department of Law at West Point. COL Williams will additionally assume duties as the Co-Director of the Lieber Institute and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Articles of War. COL Williams previously served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Law and remains Managing Editor of the Lieber Studies Series published by Oxford University Press.
COL Williams has taught law at the United States Military Academy since 2014. His selection as the 25th Head of the Department of Law is indicative of the tremendous respect and esteem with which he is regarded by both the faculty and cadets at West Point. His leadership of the Department of Law and the Lieber Institute will ensure future Army leaders are prepared to confront the complexities of contemporary warfare mindful of their obligations under the law of armed conflict
COL Williams began his military service as an Army Engineer Officer in 1998 and transitioned to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps upon graduation from law school in 2004. As a judge advocate, he has served in a number of legal positions advising commanders on a broad spectrum of legal issues related to criminal law, international law, and administrative law. COL Williams deployed to Iraq from 2006 to 2007 with 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. In addition, he served as an Associate Professor of International and Operational Law at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
COL Williams holds an LL.M. in Military Law from the Judge Advocate General’s School, a J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Florida A&M University.
